What Agents Told Me About Breaking Into Performance Capture
At an industry summit I asked a blunt question because there is only so long one can smile vaguely at networking events before needing actual information.
The question I asked directly
What do you want to see from someone trying to move into performance capture?
The answer was immediate: an acting showreel.
Not just a voice reel
Not just enthusiasm. Not just a pleasant recording setup. Not just “I once did drama and can still produce a haunted duchess if required.” An acting showreel.
That answer changed the next step. I booked a three-scene acting showreel, had a glorious and slightly terrifying time making it, and then experienced the peculiar vulnerability of putting acting work back into the world after years away from it.
Why PCAP is not voiceover with Lycra
The more I learn, the clearer it becomes that performance capture is character acting through the whole body. Breath, posture, weight, reaction, intention and physical storytelling all matter.
That is why I added British Action Academy and iD Fight training to the mix. Not because I expect every character to arrive with a sword and a firearm, though one lives in hope, but because the body tells the truth before the mouth catches up.
The patience nobody wants to practise
The other useful advice was to wait. Wait until the reels are strong. Wait until the materials show the level of work clearly. Wait until I am not approaching people with a half-built shop window and a hopeful expression.
I find this deeply irritating, which is often how I know advice is correct.
Leaning into the work before the work arrives
So that is the job for now: train, record, improve, listen, update the website, make better reels, build evidence and keep showing up. Not glamorous. Definitely useful.
